Short excerpt (3m22s) of Griot performance from Mali. This is part of a 50min show and features three performers with rhythmic backing, dancing and chanting in a call & response. A Griot is an African poet or storyteller and this genre of performance is thought to have influenced much of today's rap and hip hop music.

KS3/4 idea: The sad-sounding music has been chosen to reinforce the messages in the commentary. But just suppose the commentary was about youth and beauty. Can pupils compose or improvise an alternative soundtrack that would reinforce that different message? Turn down the existing soundtrack and play your new one along with the clip to judge it's success.

KS3 idea: Ask pupils to describe the existing soundtrack using music vocabulary as accurately as they can. Can they create a similar one-minute soundscape of their own? (Access to electronic sound sources will be helpful.)

A medley of cockney songs from the very popular Television series "Ortons Music Hall" broadcast Internationally in the late 70's.

QCA Schemes focussed on Songs and Songwriting at KS2&3 suggest using Music Hall as examples for lyrical content. Perhaps it is also worth focussing on some of the musical elements that typify this theatre music, such as the big band sound, use of changing tempos (particularly for emphasis) and occasional key changes. The performance element and humour of this music is important, particularly in its cultural context as popular entertainment spanning both world wars.
