9. HOW TO: Use the Pupil Learning Space

Introduction

The Pupil Learning Space enables pupils to access a range of lessons and resources to facilitate self-directed learning and to support class or individual teaching. As well as accessing a selection of pre-loaded resources for their instrument, the pupil can import lessons provided by their teacher.

This guide will show you how to help your pupils to access the Pupil Learning Space, and how to provide lessons for them to view.

1) Creating a Pupil login

1

Your pupils can create their own logins to the Pupil Learning Space by going to your Music Service website and clicking the Pupil Login button at the top of the screen.

2

Pupils then click on the Sign up button to start creating a login.

3

Pupils will now need to enter their details in the spaces provided. You will need to provide them with a teacher code which identifies them as belonging to your Music Service. You can find your teacher code and view a printout that you can distribute to your pupils in Help > Pupil Learning Space Welcome Letter.

Once the pupil has entered their details they should click next to continue.

4

The final stage of signup requires pupils to select their instrument from the grid shown on-screen. Selecting an instrument at this stage ensures that pupils only sees resources relevant to their instrument.

Once they have selected their instrument (and the correct option if applicable) they should click Save to finish creating their account. They will then be automatically logged in and taken to the Pupil Learning Space home page.

2) Technical Setup

Just like the teacher website, the Pupil Learning Space requires certain plugins in order to display lesson content. Once your pupils have logged in they will see a banner across the top of the homepage that tells them if they need to install any additional plugins. If any plugins are missing the banner will display a link to the download site and the steps required to install them.

Many modern computers and internet browsers come with these plugins preinstalled, so in many cases pupils may already be ready to go without requiring any additional setup.

If this banner does not appear pupils can go to http://www.charangamusic.co.uk/browser-test to check their web browser.

3) Adding a Lesson

Once pupils have logged in and set up their computer to use the website they can go ahead and explore the various preset lessons and resources available to them. However, you may wish to share specific lessons with them to support your own teaching.

Here's what you do...

step-13

Once you have found the lesson you wish to share, click "Enable Access" in the Student Access area on the right hand side of the screen. A web address and six-digit lesson code will then appear in this area. Pupils use this lesson code to add the lesson to their Pupil Learning Space

Click on the Printable lesson access details link to view a printout which you can distribute to your pupils containing the web address and Lesson Code.

The final step is for the pupil to add the lesson to their Pupil Learning Space. They will need to enter the Lesson Code into the space provided on the right-hand side of their home page and click Add Lesson. The lesson will now be accessible from the From my Teacher section of the Pupil Learning Space.
